WHAT IS A TEACHING ARTIST?
A teaching artist is one who creates opportunities for students to experience art making in a way that can often connect to classroom curricula, allow for personal revelations, and open doors to learning and development in unexpected ways.
A teaching artist is a professional in their chosen field of artistic expression, (dance, music, drama, film, poetry, visual arts, architecture, creative writing).
A teaching artist is a master at thinking outside of the box and inviting others to do the same.
A teaching artist is one who guides students through various artistic experiences in order to help them more deeply interact with a work of art.
A teaching artist is a partner, a listener, an observer, a questioner, a reflector, a communicator, a discovery guide.
A teaching artist is one who asks reflective questions, allowing for an exploration of what the answers might be.
“A teaching artist is the model of the 21st Century Artist, and simultaneously a model for high-engagement learning in education. A teaching artist is the future of art in America.”
~ Eric Booth, The Music Teaching Artist’s Bible
“Teaching Artist[s]... are educators in the truest sense of the word (the root of the word educate is to draw out). They draw out rather than put in. They are social activists.”
~ Tina LaPadula, Arts Corps, Seattle, from The Music Teaching Artist’s Bible
