What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are the essence, or life force, of a plant. They are “aromatic compounds used by plants to protect, grow and adapt. Often referred to as nature’s living energy, they are used by people for wellness purposes, aroma-therapy and cooking, and can provide psychological and physical benefits when used correctly.”

How Are Essential Oils Used?
There are three main ways essential oils are used: inhalation, topical application, and with education and a clear understanding of the oils involved, ingestion can also be a choice. By exploring these three options, you can discover a whole new form of natural wellness!
Inhalation ~ Breath them in directly from the bottle or place a few drops on a cotton ball. Diffuse them into a room using a quality diffuser. Place a few drops into a humidifier. Place a few drops into a bowl of steamy water.
Topical application ~ Place a drop in the palms of your hands or rub into the appropriate area on your skin. Some oils may cause skin irritation. Everyone's body chemistry is different. Always begin by testing oils on a small part of your arm or hand and look for any reactions. The bottom of the feet is a good place to start when applying topically, as the feet have the largest pores in the body and the skin there is known to absorb oils quickly and safely. Many oils work best if they are diluted in a carrier oil such as a pure organic vegetable, olive, coconut or jojoba oil. Always start with a small amount of essential oil to see how your body reacts. When an essential oil is undiluted, LESS IS MORE. Always use oils from a company you TRUST. Always use therapeutic, organic grade essential oils, which you are not likely to find at a health food store.
Ingestion ~ I personally ingest oils on a daily basis. In my experience, I have found this method to be very healing and supportive. HOWEVER, I am an experienced oiler and I know which oils to use and how to use them. Ingestion is not something I feel comfortable recommending to people. If you are interested in exploring the ingestion of oils for health benefits, do your research! Read books you trust, work with a professional, educate your self, explore the chemistry of essential oils and how they interact with the body.
Safety note: Please be careful with your oils! Yes, oils are natural and healing and oh so wonderful for our bodies, but they are strong and can be very powerful! If used improperly they can potentially be harmful or dangerous. Be smart... Always start with a small amount (1 drop!). Think before you apply. Never get oils too near the eyes or inner ears. Always have some vegetable oil or V6 handy to dilute if there is a reaction. Ask questions and educate yourself! Email or call me if you aren’t sure about something. Own a reference guide. Don't believe everything you read on the internet. And most importantly, be informed, be educated and follow your instincts.
